In the past few years, there has been quite a bit of movement in the South African fashion industry. This was mostly due to the fact that there was a change in the fashion market when Apartheid was introduced. When Apartheid was abolished, there was a huge shift in the fashion trends in South Africa. This meant that there were changes in the colors that were being used and also different styles and trends were being established. One of the most noticeable South African fashion trends that emerged during this era was the hip hop look, which was greatly influenced by the music that was coming out at that time from the United States.

Hip hop was highly popular among the African Americans because it represented a new kind of style and it was much different than what the majority of the African population was used to seeing. During the eighties and nineties, the number of South Africans who was wearing hip hop clothing had significantly dropped. However, this trend picked up again in the early noughties where there was a lot of focus on wearing clothing that was fashionable but that did not represent a black or African American fashion trend. It is also interesting to note that most of the major designers have adopted a style of dress that is heavily influenced by hip-hop fashion. This includes popular designers such as Dita Von Teese and Oprah Winfrey, who are both known to be very popular amongst African Americans.
